Personnel change in the Department of Brewing and Beverage Technology at the Technical University of Berlin: The previous chair holder, Prof. Dr. Brian Gibson, left the TU Berlin in December 2025 at his own request. Dr.-Ing. Philip Wietstock has taken over the scientific management and content orientation of the department.
Philip Wietstock (44) completed his studies in biotechnology engineering with a specialisation in brewing at the TU Berlin in 2009. He then worked there as a research assistant in research and teaching and received his doctorate with distinction in the field of oxidative flavour stability of beer. To take on his new responsibilities as head of the chair, Dr. Philip Wietstock has been appointed visiting professor by the TU Berlin.
The professorship for Brewing and Beverage Technology at the TU Berlin is an endowed professorship funded by the TU Berlin and co-financed by the VLB Berlin. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wietstock is to head this endowed professorship until the end of its regular term in 2028.
At the same time, the VLB and TU Berlin are currently working together on a strategy to secure the endowed professorship beyond 2028, thereby ensuring the long-term anchoring of brewing and beverage technology in research and teaching at TU Berlin.
VLB Managing Director Dr Björn Klotzbücher emphasises: "I would like to express my sincere thanks to Faculty III – Process Sciences – at the Technical University of Berlin and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Philip Wietstock for their quick and constructive response in filling the position. This has ensured the continuity of our endowed professorship and the stability of the brewing and beverage technology courses at TU Berlin. We would also like to express our sincere thanks to Prof. Brian Gibson for his dedicated work over the past five years and wish him all the best for his professional and personal future."
The Department of Brewing and Beverage Technology at TU Berlin and the Versuchs- und Lehranstalt für Brauerei in Berlin e.V. (Experimental and Teaching Institute for Brewing in Berlin) work closely together in academic education and application-oriented research. With the rapid filling of the position, this cooperation will be secured for the coming years.
